Marilyn Moats Kennedy

Marilyn Moats Kennedy
Marilyn Moats Kennedy, a former journalist and DePaul University professor, had a successful business, called Moats Kennedy, Inc., giving keynote speeches and workshops on changing workforce demographics.

However, towards the end of 2008, business slowed and by 2009 was at a standstill.

On the recommendation of a SCORE client, Marilyn came to SCORE for help. Her counselor has been Peg Corwin. Peg began by helping Marilyn revise her website, which she can now access and edit herself. Peg also advised Marilyn on appropriate copy for her website, search engine optimization and blogging.

Marilyn began blogging to showcase her expertise. She found blogging to be “tremendously helpful because, unlike traditional journalism, people give immediate feedback.” By using her writing skills and experience, she gradually came to make the most advantage of her blog by directing it toward a specific audience. In the past, Marilyn had gotten work only from those who heard her speak, but the blogging campaign has extended her reach beyond those whom she had already worked for. Speaking and workshop leads come from her improved website as well.

Peg also advised Marilyn on her social media presence, helping her fill in her Linkedin profile and organize and network with target clients through that medium.  With Peg’s advice, Marilyn learned that “The old rules of marketing still hold, but the web is a new and essential delivery system.  You have to embrace new ideas and new technologies even when it’s painful.  The whiff of obsolescence can kill you.”

Marilyn summed up the assistance Peg provided when she said, “Peg Corwin
