Meet Ping Wu, owner of the Ping Wu Design Studio and Featured Business Owner at SCORE Chicago this week. Learn how she started, and what tips she has for your success.
What is your company’s elevator pitch?
Ping Wu Design Studio is a wholesale and retail business producing and marketing innovative unisex fashion accessories that I design. These offer unique transformable options.
What inspired you to start your business?
I was inspired to start to obtain the maximum amount of creative freedom and challenges (thus excitement), to grab the dream opportunities.
Who are your clients, and give an example of how you served that person or business?
My clients are high end boutiques, museum shops, QVC, as well as mature educated women and men who appreciate smart and original designs. I sell my products at top juried Art and Craft Shows, trade shows and through TV shopping network. I look forward to opening an online store soon.
What is your biggest business challenge?
Time, and to find the right staff to help.
What is your Mentor’s name, and how he or she help you in your business?
My mentor is Mitchell Morris. He helped me in many ways: At the beginning, he taught me basic knowledge, eg. what an order looked like, how to price the products, the normal scenes at trade show… Later on, he answered my specific questions, and gave me his opinions.
He kept me focused when I was facing multiple opportunities and was overwhelmed with my thoughts. He warned me ahead of time when I was handling massive tasks without realizing I might need help.
Whenever I need any advice, even just to bounce off of ideas, I always contacted Mr. Morris, even if I was physically in different parts of the country or world. He allows me to be me, and has never pressured me to follow his advice, yet always expresses his genuine concerns with total honesty and care. His wisdom and experience calms me and gives me a sense of security. I know I can always count on his advice and support. This trust is extremely important for a solitary fighter like me, in a very competitive field of business.
What advice would you give other entrepreneurs?
It’s a hard path that is made only for people with the personality to succeed. Business starts with a thorough self-assessment. I highly recommend SCORE – a reliable and valuable resource especially for starters. Find an intelligent and kind mentor there who can understand you, support you, genuinely cares about your success. Once you find such a mentor, cherish him or her dearly and keep them close forever.
